Malhotra says you should eat high-fibre whole grains with a low glycaemic index, and six to seven servings of fruit and veg a day. She says you should stay away from processed foods, sweetened drinks, fruit juices and alcohol.

“A golden rule of diabetes is ‘no fasting, no feasting’,” says Malhotra.

She says this means you should break up your three main meals a day into six or seven smaller meals, to be eaten two to three hours apart throughout the day.
