In the South Pacific Ocean there is a tiny island which is home to a species of extremely venomous sea snake…

The island of Niue is situated in the South Pacific Ocean, 2 400 kilometres northeast of New Zealand, and is home to the katuali or flat-tail sea snake – the only place in the world where the snake is found.

While the snakes are usually found in the waters around the island, during mating season, the females swim into sea caves and lay their eggs in dry crevices. Although the snakes are extremely venomous, there are no reports of any humans ever having been bitten by one.

In fact, the fisherman of Niue have a special relationship with the snakes. According to the fishermen, seeing snakes on the surface of the water is an indication of fish underneath. “Sometimes we even talk to the katuali and ask them to make the fish take our bait.”

The snakes are not the only creatures to make Niue their home. Migratory humpback whales flock to the tiny island during breeding season, and visitors to the island can also spot the enormous coconut crabs.
