Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, who play Timon & Pumbaa respectively in Disney’s The Lion King live action remake, have hinted that their characters may be gay in the movie

In a new BuzzFeed interview, Billy, an openly gay comedian and fellow actor Seth spoke out on rumours that the beloved meerkat and his close warthog friend, are actually homosexual.

“They’re not written as gay characters,” claims Billy, while his co-star Seth chimes in, “They do have a baby at the end”.

“That’s true and we don’t know where that baby comes from. Also would that be interspecies – is that even allowed?,” adds Billy.

“I don’t even know. I don’t know if that answers the question,” claims Seth.

Billy went on to set the record straight that Timon and Pumbaa are not a couple.

“Timon and Pumbaa are different species,” Billy shared.

“I don’t even think that’s ethically correct, you know, that they would be a couple in some way.”

The comedians have both have called for more openly LGBTQ characters in family films – including Disney films

“Gay people always had to sort of search for the closeted gay character, because there were no openly gay characters, and we were so thirsty for them,” claims Billy who noted that actor Nathan Lane, who voiced Timon in the 1994 film was openly gay.

Of the character himself, he added; “I didn’t think about him being gay so much as I thought, ‘Well, I’m gay, and I have what some may consider a gay sensibility, and I’m going to bring that to the table, just the way that Nathan did.’”

Meanwhile Billy “started freaking out” over royal protocol when he met Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, at the Lion King premiere on Sunday night

The 40-year-old actor chanced to meet the royals – who have a two-month-old son Archie together – at the European premiere in London over the weekend.

But after a video surfaced online of Billy on the red carpet telling his co-star Seth what he was planning to say to Harry and Meghan, he said the list of protocols he was given before the event left him feeling confused.

Speaking during an appearance on Heart radio, he explained: “They give you a list of things you’re supposed to do when you meet them. All this protocol, right. And it all sounds very formal and very old fashioned and very official, and we didn’t know if people actually do it or not. And so when they started to approach, I just didn’t know what I was going to say.

To which Seth added: “We were gauging what to do, we were just like… Do you really say ‘Your Royal Highness’?”

Billy continued: “That sounds crazy! Plus we’re not from this country. And so when they finally started to approach, I thought, ‘Oh boy, I need to figure out what words are going to come out of my mouth’. And then I saw our co-star Keegan Michael Key and he didn’t say ‘Your Royal Highness’, he didn’t say anything! He just bowed his head slightly and shook Prince Harry’s hand. And then I really started freaking out.”

When the star did finally get to speak to the royals, he ended up chatting to Meghan – who was known as Meghan Markle before marrying Harry last year – about college, as they both attended the theatre programme at Northwestern University in Illinois.
