Imagine a car that magically displays important information (like speed and cruise control details) on your windscreen, massages targeted areas of your back as you drive, automatically connects your phone wirelessly and charges it at the same time – and goes from zero to 100km per hour in 3,9 seconds?

You’re not dreaming! The Audi RS 5 Sportback actually does all that (and so much MORE) as I discovered during my week driving this awesome car.

The power of a high-performance sports car, the outline of a dynamic coupé, the practicality of a five-door car – this is the Audi RS 5 Sportback

This baby can get from zero to 100 km/h in 3,9 seconds (I tested this…) and the standard limited top speed of 250 km/h can optionally be increased to 280 km/h. (I didn’t test this!)

Double loaded: lots of power AND lots of space

The Audi RS 5 Sportback is the perfect combination of a spacious everyday vehicle and a real sports car. The 2,9-litre V6 engine with two turbochargers, the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the sporty eight-speed tiptronic with optimised shifting times contribute to the sprinting power of the Sportback.

Head-turning design

This is a beautiful car and everyone – from middle-aged taxi drivers to teenage boys – openly drooled wherever I parked. A guy approached me to ask whether I minded him just standing next to the car while I started the engine – so he could listen to the sound.

It’s a really stylish sports car – but the classy Audi brand and design is more subtle than openly flashy. The wide, flat, single-frame front grill, massive air intakes with an RS-specific honeycomb structure and the front spoiler with “quattro” lettering dominate the design (19-inch wheels are standard, with optional 20-inch wheels available). At the back, the Audi’s RS exhaust system, with oval tailpipes and an attached spoiler lip, completes the look.

RS sports seats with optional honeycomb quilting in fine nappa leather and flattened RS multi-functional sport leather steering wheel lend a stable grip. At the seats, on the steering wheel, door sills and gear lever in the centre console, the RS lettering will remind you: you’re driving a model from Audi Sport.

See and be seen with impressive lighting technology

Optionally available Audi Matrix LED headlamps with RS-specific design make your everyday life easier: constant high and low beam dimming in the dark is no longer necessary, because a control unit switches individual diodes on and off and reacts to every driving situation. So when you have the brights on while driving on the highway at night, the Audi senses when another car is approaching and dims the lights for you.

Another tech innovation is the heads-up display on the windshield

This felt like a magic trick to me, until I read how it works. Audi’s heads-up display means that a TFT liquid crystal display, backlit by a white LED, generates a colour image, to project the most important information and indications from the dashboard onto the windshield, and two aspherical mirrors enlarge it and redirect it while compensating for the distortion caused by the shape of the windshield.

This results in safer driving as you don’t have to take your eyes off the road to read the display

And my favourite feature… massaging seats!

Massaging seats target a preselected area of your back for massaging and you can also choose what kind of pulsation you want (available for both driver and passenger).

Audi phone box connects your phone and charges it at the same time

The Audi phone box in the centre armrest connects cell phones to the car antenna wirelessly by near-field coupling and enables inductive charging based on the Qi standard.

There’s also a reverse parking (and multifunction) camera and park sensors so there’s no excuse for parking badly or reversing into anything. Traffic jam assist, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping systems make this everyone’s dream car – both for moms who carry precious cargo and petrolheads who want the power from one of the safest sports cars on the road.

Price of the Audi RS 5 Sportback starts at R1 312 000 (excluding some of the optional extras mentioned here).
