Rihanna and Maskandi singer Mbuzeni Mkhize are reportedly working on a love song together
A viral video of the KwaZulu-Natal singer performing a remix of Riri’s hit single Diamonds in Turkey last year helped put the deal in motion.
An international promoter recorded the performance and showed it to Rihanna’s team.
It would be a year before the Grammy award singer’s people contacted him, but better late than never.
“Rihanna could have chosen any person to work with her. But she choose me out of hundreds of Maskandi artists. For that, I am honoured and humbled. I thank my ancestors for the gift [of singing],” Mbuzeni told SowetanLIVE.
He is set to fly to Los Angeles in December to record new music with Rihanna in December.
Mbuzeni says that he has already started working on the track, which will have heavy Maskandi influences
The singer is in high demand all over the world.
He will soon be flying to France for a performance in Paris. Mbuzeni has also performed in Russia, China and India.
He says his shows abroad are helping him take maskandi to the world.
“This is a big thing for South Africa and for maskandi as a whole. This shows that my music is taken seriously wherever I perform,” he told Sowetan.
Rihanna’s fans have been eagerly waiting for news about her ninth studio album
She last released an album in 2016. The Barbados singer revealed earlier this year that she is working on a reggae album and has hinted that she might call it R9 – a name her fans came up with.
The album does not have a release date yet. We can’t wait to see what Rihanna and Mbuzeni cook up in the studio.
