We can influence the speed at which we age – both physically and mentally

By Dr John Demartini, human behaviour expert and founder of The Demartini Institute

Physical changes

1. If you are having difficulty appreciating your body the way it is, there is certainly nothing wrong with adding a few refinements or some polish. It is unquestionable that a few refinements can make you feel more alive and once that begins on the outside, it often takes root on the inside. So either love yourself the way you are, or transform yourself into what you love.

2. Alternatively, consider writing down 100 reasons why your body is beautiful the way it is.  This helps you appreciate your next stage of evolution. Think of all the benefits of your current age and turn them to your advantage. When you value your body, so will others.

3. If you are concerned that your partner may not find you attractive as you age or you won’t find a new relationship if they have left you, remember that the attraction between two people also starts from within. It begins with an open and loving personality and this, as much as outer physical looks, stands the test of time. Maybe the reason our sight begins to decline with age is for the sake of staying together.

Dig deep inside yourself, locate that inner drive for service and make a difference in someone’s life. This will renew your own spirit and revitalise your heart and soul

4. To increase your self-esteem physically, stand in front of the mirror and look for the things that you admire about yourself. When you can admire yourself, so will others. Everyone has his or her own unique set of traits that are attractive. And no matter what this set is there is always someone that will match and find you attractive.

5. To increase your vitality and energy levels, awaken a cause greater than yourself and your obstacles. To be alive is to serve and reward others and yourself. As long as you can breathe and move a muscle, you can contribute to the world in some meaningful and significant way.

Dig deep inside yourself, locate that inner drive for service and make a difference in someone’s life. This will renew your own spirit and revitalise your heart and soul. You will feel alive and younger. Don’t let excuses stop you from living a dream. Get moving now before your old belief takes away your new life.

6.    Slow down the physical aging process by constantly stretching your joints

Breathe deeply, eat wisely and moderately, drink plenty of water, keep moving, take high priority daily actions that are inspiring, serve others and plan your life the way you would love it to be, and you will add years to your life and life to your years. If you keep maintaining your body, it will function much more smoothly than if you neglect it.

Mental changes

There is no doubt that high levels of emotional stress can accelerate the physical aging process.

You have probably met at least a few individuals who have experienced what they imagine to be extremely stressful events; maybe a divorce, a departure of a loved one, a reduction in income or the discovery of a serious health issue that accelerated their aging processes quite rapidly. People with fluctuating emotions tend to die earlier than those with more stable moods.

Stress is a feedback mechanism to make you aware that your perceptions and emotions are unbalanced

Ensure a longer life with emotional stability, consistency, moderate lifestyle, diet and an exercise programme.

If your attitude is that you are too old to start something new, then I guess your body will make your prophecy come true. I had lunch recently with a 90-year-old woman who runs a major company, owns a huge farm, writes books and also lectures. I guess she believes she is getting younger.

You decide how old or how young you are going to be. When you don’t decide, then someone else will.  Any area of your life you don’t empower – someone else will overpower.

Many older people have regrets that they did not achieve what they wanted to out of their life and they mourn lost opportunities.

The truth is – if you truly wanted to do so many things, then you would have done them. All decisions were made according to your true hierarchy of values or those things that were most important to you at that time. If you did not get to do something, it is because you had other, more important  or fulfilling things to do at that time.

Honour what you have done instead of dishonouring what you haven’t done.

Practise gratitude – and have more blessings to count – by Dr John Demartini

Anything you can’t say thank you for in your life will run your life until you become grateful for it. Try making a list of how whatever you have done has served you and others. Don’t stop compiling that list until you can look in the mirror and be grateful for who you are and for what you have achieved so far.

My suggestion is to read something inspirational every day. Count your blessings every day. Send a thank you every day. Hug another individual – or an animal – or something, anything – every day. And never stop telling yourself: ‘No matter what I have done or not done, I am worthy of love’.

Any area of your life you don’t empower – someone else will overpower

We are never too old to start or to learn something new

If your attitude is that you are too old, then your body will make your prophecy come true. Start now, decide how old or young you are going to be. When you don’t decide, someone else decides for you. Any area of your life that you don’t empower, someone will over-power.

If you can perceive the morning sunrise then you can learn a new idea or action, dance a new step and recite a new poem. As I said earlier, read something inspirational every day. Count your blessings every day. Send a thank you every day. Hug another individual every day. You can learn to feel younger and even more alive.

13 Questions that will change your life – from Dr John Demartini

I said it before and I repeat – anything you can’t say thank you for in your life will run your life until you can. So begin making a list of how whatever you have done has served you and others. Don’t stop compiling that list until you can look in the mirror and be grateful for who you are, exactly the way you are, the body you have and the age you are.
