If you’re new to exercise, and you feel a bit lost in the gym, or if you’ve hit a plateau and you’re not seeing results, you’ve probably considered employing a personal trainer to help coach you in your exercise sessions to get the best results from your time in the gym.
But hiring a personal trainer isn’t cheap. And if you find a good personal trainer, you will understand why their knowledge doesn’t come cheaply, and why it’s 100% worth paying for.
Just like when you visit a qualified doctor, or send your kids to school to be taught by a professional teacher, or take your car to a trained mechanic, you’re paying for someone’s expertise. They know how to do that specific task better than you do, which is why it’s worth paying them to do it for you.
When it comes to a personal trainer, it should be the same
They should have studied for this job, and they should have an extensive knowledge of everything from muscle movement and body function to rehabilitating injured limbs, and proper nutrition for a wide range of clients and their specific ailments. (Bear in mind that a personal trainer is different from a nutrition coach or dietician, which requires further study, but a personal trainer should have a good idea of what a healthy diet is).
Being a personal trainer is NOT about looking ‘buff’ in the gym, and lifting the heaviest weights. So don’t pick your trainer solely on their looks!
There are MANY people out there calling themselves ‘trainers’, but not all of them actually have the know-how to back up the title.
Here are some things to ask a potential trainer, to help you find the best qualified one for your needs.
1. How much control will I have of my exercise selections?
Any trainer worth their salt will allow you almost no choice regarding the exercises you will be doing.
Unless you have an injury that precludes you from performing a particular movement, you will do what the trainer says, because – based on their professional training and expertise – those are the best movements for the best results.
