Anyone who has ever agonised over picking the perfect dining room chair, or embarked on a search to find the most comfortable desk chair knows that these pieces of furniture are an integral part of our lives
The style and design of your chair can make or break an experience. From adding to (or taking away from) your evening at a restaurant, to making a long day at work behind your desk more (or less) bearable, your chair has a powerful influence on your daily life and comfort.
Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne museum is dedicating a show to the history of chair design by the family-owned furniture company, Thonet. It highlights the fact that these pieces of furniture come in all shapes, colours and sizes, and focuses on how chairs have evolved over the years with the invention of new materials and design techniques.
The firm was founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet, a master cabinetmaker from Boppart, and over two centuries, has evolved into one of the most important makers of bentwood furniture. Its “No. 14” continues to be one of the most popular chairs to this day and is still produced in large numbers.
