Grilled cheese sandwiches are a staple comfort food we all love in winter. Try this Italian twist, and pep up your cold lunchtimes…
What you’ll need:
- 8 slices bread
- 8 slices provolone cheese
- 4-8 slices salami
- 4-8 slices prosciutto (optional)
- 4-8 slices pepperoni (or other smoked cold meat)
- 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
- 2 tbsp butter
What to do:
Simply layer your cold meats and cheese onto a slice of bread. Top off with the herbs and another piece of cheese. Cap off the sandwich, and press down lightly to ensure it stays together.
Now heat up a thick-based frying pan over low-medium heat. Allow the butter to melt (you need about ½ tbsp butter in the pan per sandwich). When it’s melted, add the sandwich to the pan, allow the butter to soak in a little, and flip to the other side for the same treatment.
You can also use a toasted sandwich maker, but will need to add the melted butter to the bread before cooking.
Allow them to cook for 3 – 4 minutes a side, or until they are the right consistency for you. The cheese will melt into gooey deliciousness, while the bread will have a crisp bite.
It’s time to serve! Enjoy this treat alone or with the family – everyone is sure to love it!
