What ‘being romantic’ means varies widely from person to person, but at its core, romance involves doing something to express affection in a meaningful yet unexpected way. A true act of romance requires creativity and sincerity, often inspired by love (either its presence or its possibility).
While harbouring affection for someone might be easy, translating it into romance usually is not. True romance comes from within.
Break the monotony
Many people associate the beginning of a relationship with romance, excitement and inspiration because everything is new. You’ve just met him and the relationship is unfolding â?? what will happen tomorrow? Next week? Next month? Will he call? Will we kiss? Will he visit?
However, after the relationship is established, you settle into a routine as a couple, and nothing is new anymore. To be romantic, to reintroduce the excitement that characterized the beginning of the relationship, do something different, something that your man wouldn’t expect. The more out of the ordinary, the better!
Court him
Pretend that you’ve just met, and you want him to fall in love with you. What would you do to impress him? To show him that you’re interested? To win him over? Treat your partner like heâ??s single â?? like you’re trying to earn his affection and trust. The opposite of being romanced is being taken for granted. No one wants to feel like now that they’ve been ‘caught’ it’s over and done with. Put on a show! Stay on your toes!
Make it personal
The stereotypical icons of romance (roses, candles, perfume and chocolate) can only go so far. Think about what really gets your man excited. Recognize what makes him unique, and find/do things for him that only he would appreciate. What are his quirky (perhaps secret) interests, obsessions and fantasies?

When heâ??s shopping, talking, or watching a movie, what makes his eyes light up? Pay attention! Being romantic means acknowledging how special a person is, and that means demonstrating that you know â?? better than anyone else in the world â?? what makes him unique.
Focus on the little things
Romance can be practised every day, and it doesn’t have to be expensive or grand. In fact, sometimes the most romantic moments are simple, spontaneous and free. Make it a habit to find a new way to be romantic every day. Be creative and have fun with it!
Be sincere
To make your partner feel appreciated, you have to really, truly be thankful for his presence in your life. Maintaining that sense of gratitude takes conscious effort. It’s easy to forget how good he is when you see him every day, but if you constantly remind yourself how lucky you are to share your life with him, every day will be the most romantic day of your life.
Be aware of his moods and feelings
Be sensitive to his likes and dislikes. Remember that no matter how close you are, he is still an individual, not an extension of yourself. Surprise him by doing something for him just because you know it would make him happy â?? something you’d never normally do for yourself.
If, however, he doesn’t seem to appreciate your efforts, or if you feel rejected, donâ??t give up â?? talk to him about it â?? his indifference might be due to other stresses in his life.
