Berlin (dpa) – Football star Lionel Messi is the world’s highest-paid athlete ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo, Forbes business magazine reported Tuesday alongside its annual ranking…
According to a Forbes estimate, the Argentina and Barcelona forward Messi had earnings of 127 million dollars in total over the last 12 months, with Portugal captain Ronaldo on 109 million dollars.
A third footballer, Brazil star Neymar, is third in the list on 105 million dollars, before Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez and tennis star Roger Federer.
American footballers Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers, and basketball stars LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant complete the leading 10 earners.
Just one woman on the top 100!
Only one woman appears in the list of the 100 highest-paid athletes: multiple Grand Slam tennis winner Serena Williams of the United States, who is placed 63rd with earnings of 29 million dollars.
The top 100 collectively earned 4 billion dollars over the last 12 months, up 5% from the previous year, Forbes said.
The top three earners reflect the global impact of football but basketball players continue to dominate the top 100, with 35 athletes on the list earning a total of 1.29 billion dollars, the report said.
The Forbes list is based on an estimate taking into account factors including earnings including prize money, salaries, bonuses and endorsements.
