We told you where to go in Durban for an incredible curry – and now we share our latest find for succulent steaks (and a reputation for pretty damn fine lamb shank too)…
Steak Grill and Co opened this year at 295 Florida Rd – in a national monument set in a gorgeous square filled with plants, sculptures and other eateries – and is already becoming fully booked on week nights – in Durban nogal.
That’s because steak lovers are loving the combination of fine dining in an elegant (but unpretentious) atmosphere, (they call it fine casual) restaurant staff who know their meat, and an extensive wine list to accompany the really good selection on the menu.
Located in Atherton House, built in 1904
“We offer a high quality overall steakhouse experience, paying particular attention to the quality of the ingredients, food presentation and the experience of dining in a national monument,” explains Steve Christodoulou, co-owner.
“One of Durban’s finest steakhouses of old, Squires Loft, was housed in the building and, with the grand old dame having been restored to its former glory, it made sense to open up this upscale space to Durban’ Steak and Wine lovers,” explains Christodoulou.
The head chef hails from the Colony – an iconic institution on the Durban dining scene for years
Head chef, Simon Mayise, who headed the kitchen at the Colony restaurant which was consistently ranked one of the best in the country by food lovers and cuisine critics alike, is serving up prime cuts such as sirloin, rump, fillet, prime rib, T-bone and Tomahawk steaks with signature sauces that include truffle mushroom, blue cheese and vodka, old school monkey gland, béarnaise, oven roasted garlic and pepper and thyme.
The wide range of starters extends from escargot and oysters to fresh black mussels, beef carpaccio and more. I ordered the deep fried and battered crocodile tail – a crispy dish with a taste that can be explained as similar to chicken but with its own unique flavour. My husband had the bone marrows – an old favourite of his when eating at a steakhouse – and loved them.
We both ordered the 300g carpetbagger fillet, with a signature sauce, chips and garnished with a bone marrow: a substantial piece of tender steak cooked to perfection (rare enough for me and well done for Rob).
It arrived looking every bit as beautiful as the professional pic I’m borrowing below – proving that their dishes deliver on the promises offered by their promo pics – and don’t disappoint on flavour and texture either.
Combos – including a chicken and prawn combo and the ultimate surf and turf – as well as bespoke burgers and a “Lekker for Locals” offering that includes a fall off the bone lamb shank (pictured below) and a chicken and prawn curry – will leave every carnivore delighted. Those looking for something lighter can enjoy an array of salads as well as a “From the Sea” offering that includes calamari, grilled kingklip, Argentinean queen prawns and grilled crayfish.
Great location and plenty of free after hours parking
The Steak Grill and Co is located in the popular Florida Rd Urban regeneration project. In the evenings, there is plenty of parking available in the new basement parkade.
Right now, Steak Grill and Co is one of a kind – although it is affiliated to the Jack Salmon Group of restaurants.
