An optometrist is trained to prescribe glasses and contact lenses. They may assist with eye exercises and vision training. They are not doctors, but can detect eye diseases. Optometrists used to be called opticians.
Opthalmologists are medical doctors who are specialised in eye diseases and surgery. You should see an opthalmologist if you have an eye disease or a medical problem with your eyes.
