The Little Things That Make a Big Difference’ is an article series outlining weight loss and diet interventions that may seem insignificant, but can make a huge difference to the success of your diet plan.

Give yourself a challenge

One of the weight loss and exercise challenges that appeals to a lot of people is turning your weight loss goals into a series of games to complete.

Essentially making the challenge of weight loss and/or exercising into something that’s fun, rather than just challenging. For most people, this creates an environment which is far easier to cope with than the usual ‘sixteen weeks of low calories and lots of running’ type plan.

So how do you do this?

Well, obviously the first component is a healthy, balanced, and consistent diet. You’re not going to lose weight on any strategy that doesn’t include a well-balanced eating plan. Once you’ve got that going, then the fun can begin.

The next step (or series of steps) is to design some challenges that you can give yourself to make yourself healthier, leaner and fitter, but all in the context of a ‘game’.

Some ideas:

  • No coffee from Monday to Friday
  • No alcohol except two drinks on the weekend
  • 300 kettlebell swings per day, every day (in addition to your regular exercise)
  • Try to run 5km in under 28 minutes (once you’ve done that, make it 26 minutes)

You get the idea…

The important thing here is that these challenges make you healthier, and change your daily life for the better. You are NOT going to assign yourself the ‘eat as much chocolate as possible on Fridays’ challenge, because it’s not helpful. Any challenge that you feel works for you can be repeated, or become part of your general plan.

Have fun, lose weight, get fit, and be content. Good deal.
