Johannesburg is the epicentre of all things glitzy and entertaining, and staying there means that you’re assured of a real taste of the adventure that is South Africa

Because it’s home to the OR Tambo International Airport, Jo’burg welcomes many visitors who are just passing through. So, if you’re coming or going, but have just a day to spend in the City of Gold, be sure to make the most of it.

10 Things to do in Jhb when you only have a day:

1. Sip a cold one at Copperlake Breweries

Craft beers (on tap) and delectable food is on offer at this brewery, which is on a scenic farm near Lanseria. Often, the unique creations of guest brewers are showcased as a treat. There are adult games on the lawn to keep avid beer-drinkers busy (including beer pong and giant Jenga), and beer tastings can be arranged in advance.

3. Tour the vibrant hub of Soweto

This is one of South Africa’s oldest and biggest townships, and is full of exciting sites and historical gems. Go on a formal tour of the township to get a taste of the South Africa of a few generations ago and how it shaped this extraordinary modern destination.

4. Up your IQ at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre

Visit this centre in Newtown (the inner city district of Jo’burg). As the largest science centre in Africa, the focus here is on technology, maths and engineering in a fun and dynamic way. Hands-on exhibits, workshops and shows make it exciting and engaging for everyone.

8. Explore human origins at Wits

Wits University is home to the Origins Centre, where the intricacies of ancient man are revealed in a range of art and remnants that date back some 80 000 years. The tour takes about two hours and is a fascinating way to spend your time in Jo’burg.

9. Cuddle a bunny

The Bunny Park in Benoni is about an hour’s drive from the airport and is home to (not surprisingly) bunnies, but also to goats, chickens, cows and donkeys. All of the animals roam free, making this ideal for families with little ones.

10. Power swing across Soweto

If you want to infuse your day in Johannesburg with adrenalin, try free-falling between the decommissioned cooling towers in the bustling township of Soweto.

11. Other things to do in Johannesburg

Of course, as one of the busiest commercial and retail centres in southern Africa, Jozi offers an endless variety of other things to do and see. Here are just a few more suggestions:
