The perfect date night has always been dinner and a movie: time to talk and time to hold hands in the dark afterwards. That’s why Vigour&Verve at Suncoast Hotels, Casino and Entertainment in Durban, is the ideal date night restaurant.

Us Durbanites are proud of our laid-back vibe and casual sophistication

So, if you’re in the mood for an urban cafe-style vibe, with casual yet sophisticated decor, smiling and efficient staff, and a menu full of all the dishes us South Africans love best, give it a try. Here’s a taste of what to expect:

We were at Suncoast on Friday night for the Tops at Spar Wine Show, so we’d had lots to drink (on an empty stomach) and were ravenous by the time we sat down to eat.

Our waitress recommended a starter to share while we browsed the surprisingly extensive menu.

We had a really delicious chicken salad with fresh avo slices

(I love it when restaurants are generous with avo: I can never have enough of it). It was big enough to have as a meal on it’s own – but not if you’re sharing with another person who is as hungry as I was.

There are lots of wraps, burgers and sandwiches on the menu but Vigour&Verve is about so much more than light meals.

We ordered the lamb shank on mash with veggies and the chicken and prawn curry

These were meals to be savoured over a glass of wine (More wine I know, but an excellent Durban curry deserves a decent drink). A glass of white wine, at R30, was good value, and so was the curry.

My curry arrived with sambals, roti AND poppadums

There were LOTS of prawns (I’ve already raved about them being generous with their avo servings: this is just another tick on my list of restaurants to go back to!) It’s pretty hot so if you can’t handle the heat, let them know when you order.

The lamb shank (almost) gave me order envy

Succulent and tender was how my partner described it, and the bed of mash and veggies it was served on, made this a really substantial meal for the hungriest carnivore.

There was no space for dessert, but as I said, I’ll be back

Suncoast is one of my favourite places to visit in Durban: parking is always safe, there are loads of places to eat at, and the casino, cinema and Barnyard Theatre ensure entertainment for all tastes – a great night out for couples, groups and families.
