Sometimes, there may be fewer calories contained in a larger amount of food as compared to a smaller portion of another high calorie dense food.

Take for example two desserts. The first dessert may be a large slice of cake and the second dessert could be a small bowl of ice-cream. Which one do you think would be higher in calories than the other? Many people would automatically assume that the large slice of cake would contain more calories than the small bowl of ice-cream.

Which holds more calories?

This may not necessarily be true however. You would only be able to precisely determine the caloric value of both desserts by measuring the calories contained in all the ingredients of both dishes and adding them up per dish, before making a comparison between the two.

Consider ingredients used

The small bowl of ice cream could in fact hold more calories depending on the type of cream and amount of it used. Similarly, other ingredients that are added to it may also hold many calories, such as sugar, sweeteners, flavourants, raisins and other fruits, nuts, etc. Adding chocolate sauce and sprinkles or pieces of chocolate and biscuit can further increase the calorie count of the dessert.

Make better choices

Avoid making assumptions about the caloric value of desserts or other meal dishes. Rather do a little research beforehand and make better choices before ordering or purchasing foods. If you do happen to prefer the food with the higher caloric value, consider sharing it with a loved one. In this way, you will be able to take in less calories whilst still enjoying the food that you want to.
