Bite-sized piece

Cut food into suitably sized pieces before eating.  No matter how tempting the food may be and how hungry you may be, be sure to nevertheless cut it up into bite-sized pieces before eating. Taking in large pieces of food is a common reason as to why many people may experience choking. This can easily be avoided.

Similarly, ensure that your child’s lunch is cut up into reasonably sized pieces, depending on their age. The same can be done for fruit or other snacks. You could alternatively grate or mash hard foods for very young children.

Remember that young children can also choke on small items such as toys, etc., so keep these items out of reach if you have a little one around.
