It’s sweet, syrupy and costs over R560 000 per bottle. This is the world’s most expensive wine
Produced in the Carpathian foothills of northeastern Hungary using ancient methods, the 2008 Tokaji Essencia will set you back a pretty penny or two.
The wine is made with grapes that are infected with the beneficial ‘noble rot’. This shrivels the grapes and concentrates their sugar levels. Only eight to 10 kilogrammes of the grapes are hand picked every year.
This year, the winemaker is releasing 18 bottles for sale. Each magnum bottle is hand blown, with a laser-etched inscription.
The bottles will be released on the market for $40,000 (over R560 000), but could fetch more at auction.
