Roasting Jack’s is a restaurant that specialises in deliciously roasted chicken rotisserie style.  I decided to try out the venue on a Friday night. Situated in Morningside at The Wedge shopping centre, I was welcomed by friendly staff and sat by the window. The first thing you notice is the delightful aroma of roasted chicken. It is not overpowering and makes you want to order straight away.

Roasting Jack’s has a great selection of coffee, milkshakes and spritzers that taste as good as they look. I ordered the Gingerbread milkshake (R45) and my companion ordered the Watermelon & Ginger spritzer (R30). The RJ Spritzers look delicious with combos like Strawberry & Thyme, Mint Lemonade, Cucumber & Celery and more that are topped up with sparkling water.

Everyone I had spoken to recommended the Blooming Onion, and as an onion lover (my significant other doesn’t eat onions so when I go out I use the opportunity to get my onion fix) I knew that is what I would start with. It did not disappoint.

The onion is so soft and tasty and the crumbed coating is so good that it could be eaten all by itself. And at only R27 per serving, it is great value for money and makes a great starter.

I also tried some of the chicken wings (6 for R32) and the homemade mayo. I’d recommend ordering some sides to share to start off with, and if you’re a chicken wing lover they also come in 12 (R73) or 18 (R108) with your choice of homemade mayo (House, Dijon, Roasted Garlic or Hot).

The chicken is cooked to perfection. The skin is so crispy and the meat is succulent. It’s so delicious you could eat it by itself, but the crinkle cut sweet potato fries (R29) were a nice addition.

Roasting Jack’s also serves burgers, which looked impressive (the table next to me had each ordered one) but I stuck to the chicken with sides.

They also offer salads and I tried the Corn & Avo (R79) which was good, especially with the roasted chickpeas. And although it was tasty, I’d recommend the chicken with sides. The salad, in my opinion, would make a great lunch.

I jumped the gun and ordered the Gingerbread milkshake as my drink (life is short, eat dessert first), so when it was time for dessert I was already way too full. The milkshake tasted like drinking ginger biscuits and had just the right amount of sweetness. It was also the perfect amount – enough to count as a treat but not so much that you regretted drinking it all.

If you do have a sweet tooth, Roasting Jack’s also has a great dessert menu. From French Lemon Tart to an Espresso Brownie, a Sticky Ginger Apple Pie as well as the traditional Ice-cream & Chocolate Sauce. Desserts range from R37 to R55.

Roasting Jack’s made some of the best chicken I have ever tasted and they are very reasonably priced. You can also order food for delivery. This is the perfect place to meet for a burger or to order a selection and share with a group. The question is, would I spend my own money and go back to the restaurant? The answer is a resounding YES.
