Washington (dpa) – Eight people were killed through Sunday as a massive storm front swept through southern US states, spawning tornadoes and thunderstorms…

Eight people, among them three children, died in tornadoes, gusting winds and flash flooding in Texas and Louisiana, according to media reports.

Two children died in Angelina County in Texas when the car they were travelling in with their parents was hit by a tree. In West Monroe in neighbouring Louisiana, a 13-year-old by died in a flash flood.

A woman died when her mobile home was destroyed by a tornado near Houston. Four other people were injured.

The towns of Franklin in Texas and Hamilton, Mississippi saw severe tornado damage.

The weather system was moving north-east late Sunday. East Coast cites including New York and Washington were battening down.

“There is concern that the severe thunderstorms with downpours and strong gusty winds continue to march across the Mid-Atlantic, southern New York and into south-western New England on Sunday night,” AccuWeather meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski told USA Today.

The start time for The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, was moved up on Sunday, and Tiger Woods was able to celebrate his win around noon. The tournament doesn’t usually wrap up until the afternoon.
