Whether you’ve got a round face or are struggling to shed those last few stubborn kilos, or simply want to look just a little bit slimmer (don’t we all?), your hair is there to be your magical best friend.

Yip, the right haircut can and will make it look like you’ve been spending all your spare time in the gym, and since we’re huge fans of anything that makes our lives easier (like not having to go to the gym!!), we’ve found a few slimming hairstyles that are sure to do the trick…

Hello height

Adding some height to your ‘do with a doek, very high top knot or bun adds length to your face and draws the eye upward, which instantly slims it down. If you have a round face, try a looser style that’s not so severe.

Great wave

If you’ve got longer hair, avoid super sleek, straight styles – especially if your hair is all one length. Choppy layers are best as they create dimension and a softer look and lengthen the face. Waves are also more slimming, especially if you add more to the bottom half of your hair. This creates more volume away from your face, creating balance.

Side swept

While you’re often told to avoid a fringe if you have a rounder face, there is actually a slimming version you could certainly try. A side-swept and wispy fringe is incredibly flattering and can do wonders for your face shape. Just make sure you don’t cut it too short and that you keep it less chunky than full on bangs.

Hello pixie

Despite what you may think, super short styles can actually work for you and be slimming. In fact, a pixie cut could do you all sorts of favours, provided you keep it shorter around the bottom and sides and give volume and texture to the top part, as this will counter a fuller jawline.

Layer it up

If you do have straight hair or enjoy straightening it with your flat iron, keep the length slightly longer and be sure to get your hair stylist to add plenty of layers. Layers soften any style, while very straight lines appear harsher and emphasise a wider face.

Time for a pony

There’s nothing more convenient than throwing your hair into a ponytail, but a slicked back look isn’t very slimming. When rocking your pony, keep it softer by leaving some strands out to frame your face, or create some volume by keeping the pony higher. This will lengthen your face and slim the sides at the same time.
