Lerato Kganyago is calling out Heavy K for comments he made about what it takes to be a female DJ

Heavy K recently visited Metro FM’s studios and dished out some eyebrow-raising advice.

The Drumboss hitmaker revealed on the show that women often ask him for tips on how to make it in the DJ industry.

“I always say to them, ‘Do not DJ like a woman, DJ like a man’.”

Lerato, who is one of only a few female DJs who can book gigs for tens of thousands of rands, described Heavy K’s comment as “tacky”.

“Love Heavy K. But this is a very tacky quote,” she tweeted.

She was not the only one who took offence at Heavy K’s advice for female DJs.

“Why is the standard based on gender not talent? I thought having lady Djs would wipe the mindset that it’s a man’s territory. Come on HeavyK don’t disappoint us sikuthanda,” one tweep wrote.

Another tweep added: “I don’t know but this feels like an insult to women.”

But Heavy K claims his comment was taken out of context and he took to Twitter to explain what he meant.

“This is simple! Biggest Djs in the world are males &us as Male djs we got a tendency of thinking we are better than females due to skill, song selection, equipment flexibility also bcs of the fact that it’s a Male dominant industry so I was saying I want to change that mentality…” he wrote in a tweet.
