The Little Things That Make a Big Difference’ is an article series outlining weight loss and diet interventions that may seem insignificant, but can make a huge difference to the success of your diet plan.

Avoid BOREDOM at all costs!

If you find yourself eating too much and too often then I’m going to suggest that it’s for a very obvious reason. You are bored.

Or, at least, you’re bored when you’re deciding to have something to eat. You see, I sometimes fall into that trap too, so I know what I’m talking about. It goes something like this: You decide to relax. What do you do? Watch TV! That’ll be great! There’s that new series you want to watch. You get about thirty minutes in, and realise you need to drink something. Coffee (or wine if it’s the evening). What goes well with coffee? Biscuits! You open the biscuit tin, and take two biscuits. You close the tin, but then you think “Two isn’t enough to REALLY enjoy myself. I’m going to have some more”. So you grab a whole bunch.

The next day you find yourself regretting the whole event, and you can’t understand why it happened.

Boredom. It’s a terrible thing

Watching TV isn’t very stimulating. So you’re relaxing, and it may be working, but you want more than that. And food stimulates the senses a lot more than TV does.

So, how do you avoid this?

Two ways:

  • One, if you’re going to watch TV to relax, then you allow yourself only fruit to eat while you do so (so even if you eat a lot you’ve done no damage to the diet);
  • Two, find more constructive ways to relax, like going for a walk, seeing a friend, reading a book, or playing a sport. Relaxation doesn’t require doing nothing, it just requires you to do something out of the ordinary.
