If you’re a Johannesburg foodie and looking for the latest spot in the Northern Suburbs to visit, Lanser’s on Main is a great choice. Think authentic and hearty Italian and French food, a passionate chef (Lanser himself) and five-star service all around.
Located in the Naturally Yours centre in the heart of Bryanston, just off Main Road, Lanser’s on Main has a great view that stretches over the city. When we visited, we were greeted by a relaxed and laid-back ambience. The restaurant’s décor is focused on an old-school European Bistro theme, with black and white movies playing above the bar and classic French music playing in the background.
Setting the scene
While enjoying a chilled glass of Bouchard Finlayson Sauvignon Blanc, we perused the menu and found a combination of light, simple fare, focusing on top-notch ingredients, and more hearty classics, with all the trimmings. This doesn’t mean that the chef plays it safe, however – many of the dishes showed unique twists and the incorporation of surprising elements which take them to the next level.
Lanser Fourie, the namesake of Lanser’s on Main, is present and hands-on in all aspects of his restaurant and that passion shines through in the details – from Lanser himself talking through the menu with each guest and taking their orders, to the care that is put into each meal.
European dining at its best
For starters, we chose a tomato tart topped with chèvre, as well as the chef’s recommendation: stuffed and seared Falklands calamari, served with a vodka and mustard cream sauce. Both dishes were unique and surprised us with their combination of flavours.
For mains, we went with some hearty fare in the form of Crispy Pork Belly (think melt-in-your-mouth) with the most perfect roast potatoes I have tasted, as well as a classic Beef Wellington.
was a light, creamy and not-too-sweet Coffee Crème Brûlée – the ideal way to end an evening of perfection!
Keen to visit Lanser’s on Main for yourself?
It’s definitely worth a visit (and another and another – I know it’s going to be a firm favourite of mine), whether you are a visitor to Johannesburg or a resident. They are open every day – except Sundays – from 11am – 9:30pm. Our dinner was interrupted by load shedding, and the restaurant was able to keep operating with almost no disruptions, so it’s also a great option if your power is out at home.
