When told that I would be the perfect one from our team to go to Canvas & Cabernet, a wine and paint evening, I wasn’t sure if it was because I like to craft or because I like to drink wine. I took it as a compliment and went with both. I arrived at the EB Social Kitchen at Exclusive Books in Hyde Park and we were invited to sit at the bar while we waited for everyone to arrive. The sun was starting to set and the view was magnificent. The table had been set up and even included an easel (making me feel like a true artist) and we helped ourselves to some snacks.
The idea is to make this a monthly event on the first Wednesday of every month. The events are themed, and ours was With Love From France. We received a picture of what we would be painting earlier that day and as my friend said: I am going to be very impressed if they can get me to paint something that looks even remotely like that picture. I, on the other hand, looked at it and thought, how hard can it be?
We started with the background, and blending paint is lots of fun. The teacher guided us step by step and would come round to ensure we were on the right track. It was when I had to add the shadows that I knew there was no going back. We each got stencils to trace the outline of the lady with the umbrella and Eiffel Tower. I found it very calming and lots of fun even though I wasn’t any good at it. Everyone added their own spin to their painting and they all looked good. Someone added a wine glass, another added stars by flicking white paint onto the canvas (which I later also tried) and one even painted a cat!
All this was done while the French wine expert, Herve, took us through a tour de France of wines. With wines carefully selected from different regions of France including a Rhône, a Burgundy and the famous Bordeaux, we were able to choose which ones we wanted to try. The food was also amazing and I’m really excited to have dinner there soon. The service was excellent and afterwards, we got to browse the bookstore, which is one of my favourite things to do.
What I loved
- Even if you don’t have an artistic bone in your body, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The art coach takes you through it step by step and comes round to check. Feel free to ask questions.
- Fun night out and you’ll be home before 10 pm.
- Great food and wine and lots of laughs.
If you’re looking to do something different, get a group of friends together and try out Canvas & Cabernet. Prices differ depending on the workshop, but the one I attended included snacks, delicious French wine and all art supplies and was R599 pp.
