The mayor of the Italian city of Bologna has caused a Twitter storm after he called spaghetti Bolognese “fake news”!
Virginio Merola was attending the opening of FICO Eataly World (the world’s largest food theme park which we are DEFINITELY visiting asap!) when he Tweeted the controversial information.
According to Merola, tourists think that their idea of spaghetti Bolognese with a meat and tomato sauce over spaghetti comes from Bologna. However, spaghetti isn’t something that is traditionally found in the area.

The mayor would prefer Bologna to be famous for its tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagne. He told an Italian broadcaster that spaghetti Bolognese in the ‘tourist’ interpretation just doesn’t exist. Restaurants in Bologna are frustrated by tourists’ constant requests for ‘spag bol’!
