If you and your partner are looking for romantic ideas to celebrate your honeymoon or anniversary, look no further than a cruise holiday…

If we’ve piqued your interest, Cruiseabout’s Marketing Campaign Manager Divan Viljoen and  Eamonn Ferrin, Norwegian Cruise Line Vice President & MD South Africa, recently offered up some of their most romantic moments to experience out at sea.

1.       Love at first ship

As with each couple, every cruise ship is different. Nothing quite compares to the sheer excitement you’ll feel once you see the ship for the very first time, docked in port, ready to embark.

Many tend to focus on the time aboard, but this special event can only happen once, and who better to share it with than the one you share your heart with?

“The experience is by far one of the most underrated romantic moments of a cruise,” says Viljoen.

2.       Sunsets over the sea

“I have witnessed a fair number of sunsets on my travels but none come close to the ones I’ve seen at sea,” says Ferrin. “The way the light hits the shimmering water is tough to beat.”

For couples on a cruise, front row seats to this natural show are guaranteed at the observation lounge of the Norwegian Encore. Set to launch this year, it spans two decks with a full-service bar and live pianist.

3.       Midnight and moonlight

Cruise ships might typically carry high volumes of passengers on board, but finding time alone is easier than you think. Many cruise ships offer plenty of private, kid-free areas, but one of the most intimate and heart-melting moments is simply lying alongside your loved-one at night in your stateroom.

As the ship cuts its way across the ocean, you’ll feel like you’re the only two people in the world. It’s so serene and peaceful. Try an ocean-facing suite to make the most of the moonlight. There is no experience quite like it.

4.       Table for two

On a cruise, high-quality food options and ambient settings are endless, which means that you’ll spend less time searching for something agreeable to eat, and more time enjoying each other’s company over truly memorable meals.

Freestyle cruising really is just as great as it sounds! Pioneered by NCL, passengers have absolute freedom and flexibility with no fixed dining times, no dress codes, and no limit on dining options.”

With 27 specialty dining options offered throughout the fleet, passengers can dine inside or ocean-side along The Waterfront, opt for a four-course meal with a fine French wine at Le Bistro, or indulge at the Italian classics at LA Cucina. If you’d simply like a burger and chips on a casual date night, you and your sweetheart can certainly have it at O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill.

5.       Suit up

While many say dinners on board top the list for romance, Viljoen says that it’s the moment just before a meal that will really melt your heart. Dress codes in the evenings is no longer mandatory on most cruise ships, but that doesn’t mean you can’t slip into something stunning.

Setting eyes upon each other just before heading out really is something special, as is the walk to dinner itself when those proud and lucky lads can show off their lovely ladies.

6.       Have date night out on the deck

If you and your sweetheart are after a little fun after dark, Norwegian was awarded Best Nightlife in 2018. Dinner theatre shows, professional acrobatics, aerial performances, and nightly live music take date night to a whole new level.

Spice H20 on select ships is an adults-only area where couples can enjoy cascading waterfalls and simmer in hot tubs. At night the venue transforms into an open-air nightclub where you’re invited to show off your sultry moves once the dance floor calls your name.

7.       A little bit of fun and laughter

Doing something that makes you both laugh can also strengthen that romantic bond.

Cruise ships are packed with new and fun activities that couples can try out together, from waterslides to mini-golf, or playfully challenging each other with a game of ten-pin bowling. The onboard comedy clubs are just the place for a good laugh, featuring performances by top-notch comedians.

8.       Cruise destinations as a duo

From Norway’s mystical fjords to the sultry Spanish Riviera, cruising couples will fall head over heels for the destinations.

There is nothing more memorable than visiting a new location together. When heading ashore, you are completely free to explore on your own. You can also opt for one of the pre-planned shore excursions, which are what honeymoon dreams are made of.

9.       From me to you, with love

Most cruise lines offer gift services to add an extra special experience for your loved one.

Start your cruise with gourmet treats on arrival or a relaxing spa massage. Have your favourite bottle of wine or a bottle of bubbly delivered to your room with chocolate covered strawberries. On a cruise holiday, you can create your own romantic moments when your partner least expects it.

Options for a cruise holiday are endless, with dazzling destinations and some seriously innovative cruise ships. If you’re ready to embark on a romantic trip that’s jam-packed with memorable moments, speak to a specialist cruise consultant to get you on your way.
