‘The Little Things That Make a Big Difference’ is an article series outlining weight loss and diet interventions that may seem insignificant, but can make a huge difference to the success of your diet plan.
No milk, no sugar, thanks
If you are a hot-drinks fan (like me) then you might have an issue in your diet that you may not have considered… and it’s one of the things most people who wish to lose weight are the most reluctant to change. It’s the milk, cream, and sugar that you add to your hot drink of choice.
But why is a little milk and sugar a problem?
Surely, it can’t be THAT calorie-heavy? Well, consider this. Let’s say, like the average (conservative) coffee- or tea-drinker, you drink about seven or eight hot drinks per day.
A cup of black, unsweetened coffee or tea contains around seven calories, so your hot drinks are not a problem, at only around 50 calories per day.
But if you add milk and sugar to this drink the calorie content goes up to around 80 calories per cup (more if you add more sugar and cream). That kind of total lands you at over 500 calories per day – an extra meal, basically.
You see the problem?
You invest so much time and energy into eating healthily and cutting your portion sizes, and then you drink all those calories that you’ve saved! So your whole diet could be derailed by drinking milk and sugar in your hot drinks. And that’s not worth it.
Teach yourself to enjoy unsweetened, milk-free drinks, use fat-free milk and sweeteners (I don’t recommend this), or stop drinking them until you have reached your goal-weight. Those are the options. Sad, but true.
