The trial of a French archbishop accused of not pursuing sexual abuse accusations by another priest began in Lyon on Monday…

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin was seen in television clips surrounded by his lawyers in the courtroom.

“I never tried to hide these awful deeds, not to mention covering them up,” Barbarin was quoted as saying at the start of the trial by broadcaster France Info.

Barbarin, the archbishop of Lyon, is accused of not notifying authorities about the sexual assault of minors by another priest, who is alleged to have assaulted dozens of children in the 1980s.

“Finally, we’ll find out the truth about a mechanism of silence,” one of the alleged victims, Alexandre Dussot Hezez, said on the side-lines of the trial, according to France Info.

Defence lawyers began the legal proceeding with an attempt to have the case thrown out due to a formal error.

The hearing is expected to continue until Wednesday, but it is still unclear when a verdict will be issued.
