Nelson Mandela Square

Kids love getting up close and personal with the massive bronze statue of former South African President, Nelson Mandela. This statue is six metres high and watches over the vibey square, which is surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops, and the Sandton City shopping centre. This means that there’s something here for the whole family.

Montecasino is for the Birds

The Montecasino Bird Gardens are home to loads of bird species, as well we reptiles, mammals and other furry- or feathered friends. The scheduled bird show is a hit for everyone. Afterwards, head to one of the many restaurants for a bite, watch a movie, or challenge each other to a game of tenpin bowling. Laser Tag is also available here and is just the right combination of adrenalin, smoke machines, and lasers.

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre

This is a little further afield, but still only around 10 kilometres from Sandton. This science centre may have its focus on education, but is certainly all about fun too. The exhibits change from time to time, which means that families always have something new and exciting to see.

Neighbourgoods Market Johannesburg

In Braamfontein, about 10 kilometres from Sandton, is the vibrant outdoor Neighbourgoods Market, which celebrates all things Jo’burg and South African. But, there are also international flavours that are showcased here in terms of food, culture and live music. Kids and their parents love sampling the foods and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.

South African National Museum of Military History

For a cultural injection, take the children to this museum, which tells the interesting tales of the South Africa of yesteryear. Exhibits cover several wars, submarines, weapons, aircraft, and armoured vehicles; as well as true-life stories of some of the heroes and victims of these.
