We review Vegan Cakes and Other Bakes – a selection of sweet and savoury recipes for desserts, cupcakes, breads, puddings and more.

Whether you have recently started following a plant-based diet or you have been vegan for a while, these ideas are going to liven up your collection of recipes, and should become go-to treats in time. It’s also a great option if you or a family member is allergic to dairy or eggs.

Vegan Cakes and Other Bakes contains 80 recipes, categorised into Sweet Bites, Cakes, Pies & Tarts, Filling Food and even a Christmassy section. There is a good mix of both sweet and savoury, and also between snacks and main meals. The authors have also compiled a comprehensive Vegan Basics chapter, where they provide expert advice on cupboard essentials, what equipment is needed for best results and how to easily substitute animal-based ingredients with vegan alternatives.

While the cookbook calls for some specialised ingredients, such as Vegan Sour Cream, there is a chapter that teaches you how to make these yourself using the available options in the store. In this case, making the recipes would require a bit of preparation to make sure you have all the necessary ingredients ready to go.
