Convicted murdered Oscar Pistorius was temporarily released from prison to attend his 101-year-old grandfather’s memorial and Twitter users are not impressed

He was granted “compassionate leave” to attend the memorial service, which was held in Centurion on Tuesday.

Oscar, who is serving 13 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, was escorted by police officers and was back in prison a few hours after his release.

The Department of Correctional Services says there is nothing improper about the move as inmates are all able to apply for such leave. Whether it is approved or not depends on various factors including low risk and good behaviour.

But tweeps think in Oscar’s case the move smacks of “rich privilege”

“Oscar Pistorius was released to attend his grandpa’s memorial service while King Buyelekhaya was refused permission to attend Mama Nomzamo’s Funeral,” paradoy account @ADVBarryRoux tweeted.
