There’s been quite a buzz about Bio-Oil’s new Dry Skin Gel – the company’s first new product in over 30 years! So we got one of our writers to review Bio-Oil Dry Skin Gel and put the product through its paces.
Hi, my name is Claire, and I have very, very, VERY dry skin. In fact, I once went for a skin analysis session and the consultant told me I had the driest skin she’d ever seen. While that’s not something I’m particularly pleased about, it does make me exceptionally qualified to review beauty products that claim to address dry skin concerns. And that’s why, when I heard about Bio-Oil’s brand new Dry Skin Gel, I knew I had to put it to the test.
(⬆️ Basically me)
What’s the deal with Dry Skin Gel?
The first thing you’ll notice about the product is that it isn’t a cream, but a pinkish gel. The gel formulation allows most of the inactive water that you usually find in cream and body butter to be replaced with oil – which (according to the people at Bio-Oil) is exactly what your dry skin needs. If you’d like to find out more about how Bio-Oil Dry Skin Gel works, you can click here to read about the science behind it.
The gel is made up of 50% Bio-Oil Skincare Oil, and it is paraben and preservative free, which is a bonus. I also love that it’s non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.
What’s it like to apply?
When you open the tub, the gel gives off a pleasant Bio-Oil scent that you will be familiar with if you’ve ever used Bio-Oil on stretch marks and scars. When you start applying it, you will notice one of the biggest differences between the Dry Skin Gel and other creams: it glides on very smoothly and you only need to use a tiny amount.
Even though I knew I needed to use a small amount, I didn’t realise quite how small! Initially, I used way too much and things got a little… messy, but once I mastered the art of getting the perfect amount out of the container, the experience was much better. The gel goes on smoothly, making it quick to apply – it also doesn’t need to be rubbed in like a lot of creams and butters.
How does it feel on your skin?
After application, the Bio-Oil Dry Skin Gel didn’t sink into my skin completely, leaving a layer of product on top. I know that some people don’t enjoy the feeling of moisturising products that don’t absorb into your skin, but I love them because they seem to be more effective at combatting dry skin. Plus, the gel really left my skin looking radiant, with a healthy summer glow. If you’re looking for something to put an end to dull-looking skin, this is it!
So, does it help with dry skin?
I used it once a day every day for about a week and am very happy to report that, yes, the Dry Skin Gel made a difference to my skin. It felt smooth and supple for the whole day with none of that tight, stretched-out feeling that all dry skin sufferers dread. After I stopped using it, my skin still felt moisturised for a few days.
I also tested it on my 5-year-old (who has unfortunately inherited my dry, sensitive skin), and it cleared up her dry skin patches and a few mild eczema spots in just 2 days.
Bio-Oil Dry Skin Gel review: Verdict
Once you get the amount of product right, the gel is quick and easy to apply. It kept my skin moisturised for more than a day and cleared up dry patches after a few applications. If you’re not a fan of products that don’t absorb completely into your skin, the Dry Skin Gel may not be for you; although it’s lightweight, you can definitely feel it on your skin after application.
