It might sound highly unusual to plan a wedding to be held at your home, but it can be a truly magical experience (not to mention cost-effective too!)

So, you are planning your big day. There will be flowers, music, good food, cake, photographs and champagne… and this will all be taking place in the comfort of your own home. It might sound highly unusual to plan a wedding to be held at your home, but it can be a truly magical experience (not to mention cost-effective too!).

If you want to have a home wedding, it’s time to dust off your urn kettles for coffee and tea and start looking for décor hire that can be reused around your home once your wedding is over.

Below are some top tips to follow for hosting a home wedding to remember:

You need room to say “I do”

One of the most important things to plan for your at-home wedding is the space to seat everyone. If your current setup does not have the room for everyone to sit, stand and dance comfortably, it is time to start trimming the guest list a little.

It is important not to mistake overcrowded for cosy, so if you only have a small space to work with, you will have to be creative. The general rule is 500 cm to one metre of floor space per guest for row-seating. If you will be hosting an indoor to outdoor wedding, you will need to be sure that everyone can fit inside should the weather change for the worse.

Blueprint the day

You will need to decide ahead of time which rooms you want to incorporate and which are off limits. You do not want guests wandering into your bedroom during the celebrations and seeing something embarrassing, so it is best to spend time deciding which rooms are open and which are restricted.

If you have a large living- or dining room, you can use this space for seating or cocktails after the ceremony. One important aspect to remember is to designate bathrooms for men and women, and ensure that they are clearly marked. The kitchen should not be open to guests, so speak to your caterers about remembering this rule. Spend at least two weeks before your wedding setting aside the rooms in your house so you know which are best suited to what function.

Just because your wedding will be a home wedding rather than one in a venue, it does not mean that you should forgo hiring a planner

Start early

Planning an at-home wedding means that you will need to start working on your home at least 10 to 12 months in advance. This is especially true if you want your garden to look a certain way and if you have to make any dramatic changes to the decor in your home.

Two weeks before your wedding, you will need to bring in gardeners, window cleaners and general cleaners to get everything in shape for your wedding day. Be sure that you have planted any flowers you want to bloom on the day well ahead of time, and make any repairs to your home at least a month in advance. If you need to buy crockery, cutlery and urn kettles, do so two to three weeks before the wedding so you do not forget.

Don’t forgo a planner

Just because your wedding will be a home wedding rather than one in a venue, it does not mean that you should forgo hiring a planner. Wedding planners can provide professional help when it is needed most, such as negotiating deals with vendors and finding caterers who are willing to work in home kitchens.

On the day, your planner will be able to coordinate your suppliers, ensure that all the food is prepared on time and ensure that the vendors know exactly what you are looking for in terms of décor and ambience. Planners will also make sure that the space is laid out optimally thanks to their years of experience in the wedding industry.

Keep your house clean

Now, this tip almost goes without saying, but some people do not think about how a clean house can make a good impression. It is advisable to do a deep clean at least two days before your wedding, but you should be cleaning your house daily at least two weeks before your big day arrives.

Keeping your house clean in advance will make it easier to clean on the day, as you will not be rushing around trying to remove stains from walls or doors and windows.  On the day, hire a professional cleaning company to perform a deep clean of your house, paying careful attention to the main rooms that guests will be in. As an extra touch, choose a fragrance you and your partner enjoy and use diffusers in your house for extra freshness. Be sure all crockery, cutlery and urn kettles are cleaned too.

Prepare for the wedding of your dreams

Your wedding is arguably one of the most exciting days of your life. And if you are hosting it in your own home, it could be one of the most stressful, too. In order to have your special day go off without any issues, you will need to start getting to work on your garden early, and clean your house daily at least two weeks beforehand.
