Mama Mia – the screen version of the London and New York hit musical – stars Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and 22 ABBA classic hits. Only released in the USA in July, Mama Mia is already the 250th highest grossing movie ever.
The story is built around the music of Abba. The theatre crowds loved its raucous, dance party vibe. Now it comes to the silver screen, with some truly delightful performances from Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.
It is the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) a young woman living on a picturesque Greek island with her mother, Donna (Streep.) Together, Donna and Sophie run a ramshackle island inn, and they are in the midst of preparing for Sophie’s wedding.
Donna has always done her best to raise her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), while simultaneously running a successful hotel on a small Greek island, but now is the time for her to let go.
As the wedding approaches, Sophie needs to know who her father is. She was the result of one of her mother’s summer flings, and her mother has never revealed which one.
Donna’s close friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) will be at the wedding, but, unknown to Donna, Sophie has invited three of her mother’s former lovers.
When Sophie marries she wants her father to give her away. The bride discovers the identity of her father, and her mother finds out that it’s never too late for a little romance.
