The charming town of Stellenbosch is synonymous with some of the world’s best wines…
But, it is also a perfect family vacation spot, thanks to the fact that it offers so many activities and attractions that are not related to wine.
This is great news for parents who are planning to visit the Western Cape or the Cape Winelands with young ones in tow, or for visitors who don’t drink at all. Because Stellenbosch is only about an hour from Cape Town, it is also convenient for day trips.
Here are some of our favourite attractions for some real family-friendly fun in Stellenbosch:
1. Mountain biking
There are a number of fabulous places to explore on a mountain bike. These include the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, which has routes for beginners, and Paradyskloof MTB trails, which are better suited to more experienced riders.
Families with kids have to experience the thrill of a paintball challenge. There are several paintball fields in the gorgeous countryside around Stellenbosch, and these promise fun and a little adrenalin for parents and children alike.
3. 4×4 trails
Put your car and your skills to the test while you explore some of the mountains, valleys and forests around Stellenbosch on a rugged 4×4 trail.
4. Visit the Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre
This isn’t only home to giraffes, but also farm animals, zebras, monkeys, wild cats, and antelope. A real hit for the little ones.

Some people say “live in the moment, no need to photograph everything”. Throw that whole person away 😂. I love taking photos not necessarily of myself, but of events, places and things. Cause of the memories I created in those moments. Then I get to relive those memories in pictures ❤️. #HolidaySquad #NewFriends #Thankful
Many of the 4×4 trails and hiking trails are also perfect for quad-bikes. Take it easy, or get some speed for a little more excitement; all while drinking in the fresh Winelands air and enjoying the sunshine on your back.
6. Horse riding
Whether you are an experienced rider or a first-timer, there are guided horse rides available in Stellenbosch for you. This is a fantastic way to experience the fauna and flora of the Western Cape while enjoying the interaction with a magnificent horse.

Explore the trails and pathways through the surrounding mountains and reserves for a really special perspective of the Cape Winelands. Guided and self-guided hikes are available; and range from short and easy trails to more challenging multi-day ones.
8. Visit Butterfly World
Children and butterflies are a winning combination, and this incredible sanctuary for smaller animals and beautiful butterflies is in Klapmuts, only 25 minutes from the centre of Stellenbosch.
9. Go for a game drive
Some of the local game farms and wineries, such as Vredenheim, offer game drives to their visitors. See a huge variety of antelope, as well as incredible bird species.
10. Visit the crocodiles
See these prehistoric-looking predators and other exciting animals at the Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm, just 25 minutes from Stellenbosch. This farm also has great facilities for little ones with plenty of energy to burn, including snake shows.
This part of the Cape Winelands is such a fantastic family destination for a number of reasons. There is plenty of excellent accommodation in Stellenbosch that ranges from boutique hotels to guesthouses, wine farms, and B&Bs. What’s more, it is alive with culture and an undeniable sense of history, and is home to some of the finest restaurants in the country.
