We’ve heard it many times. “Oh, ‘so and so’ just released a new song? It sounds just like (insert American singer’s name here)”
Considering that Hollywood, and America as a whole, have had a massive impact on international entertainment, it comes as no surprise to learn that celebrities from around the world borrow sounds from their US counterparts
You can get away with this in South Africa for the most part, but if you borrow too heavily from an American artist then the feedback isn’t always positive.
Here are a few local musicians who’ve been accused of “copying” the sounds of established American artists
Boity – Cardi B
Boity is barely a month into her rap career but she’s already drawing comparisons (whether favourable or not is up to you to decide!) with American rapper, Cardi B.
Boity’s song Wuz Dat showed off her impressive, confident delivery but a few fans felt like they’d heard something similar before…

Cassper Nyovest – Meek Mill
Cassper Nyovest has been compared to a number of American artists but the reference that comes up most often is Meek Mill.
From as early as 2014, many local fans have accused Cassper of sounding like the Philadelphia-born rapper.
