If you’re in Umhlanga and looking for wholesome Mediterranean-inspired pasta and pizza served in generous portions in a laid-back urban setting, then you’ll love PRIMI’s new décor, cocktail menu and Spuntini.

We enjoyed a lazy Sunday lunch at PRIMI on Gateway’s Palm Boulevard in Umhlanga Ridge: superb service, an unpretentious vibe – and GREAT food!

PRIMI has been a South African favourite franchise since they opened their first store in 1999 – and much loved for their fresh ingredients and a welcome change from the American-inspired pizza chains we’d had to choose from in the past.

You still get awesome pizza at PRIMI (their new wood-fired pizza ovens combine traditional wood-fire baking and innovative gas-burner technology, turning out a perfectly baked pizza in 90 seconds!) but they now offer so much more than just pizza and pasta.

We went for a Spuntini selection of starters – Instagram-worthy, almost too beautiful to eat, but really delicious.

Let me elaborate on the Spuntini concept

Spuntini – a recent addition to the menu – is a communal eating experience where you can order a selection of snack foods for the table. We had the PRIMI poppers (piquanté peppers stuffed with a crumbed, herbed feta), halloumi lettuce wraps and pan-seared calamari tossed with rocket and tomatoes.

The aromas from the pizza oven tempted me to indulge

My ENORMOUS pizza came topped with fresh spinach, feta, roasted olives, pomodoro, mozzarella & pecorino. I pride myself on mostly managing to finish an entire pizza, but even I had to leave the last two slices…

My vegetarian daughter went for the Recco Classico pasta: a curry-infused Napoletana with garlic and fresh chilli, rounded off with cream and garnished with fresh coriander. She pronounced it divine – and loved that Colleen our waitress, offered to have it made as hot or mild as she wanted.

Carnivores will love the lamb chops

My husband, who is restricted to a mainly vegetarian diet at home, ordered the lamb chops – which proved to be the highlight of his weekend! He was delighted with his FOUR juicy loin chops (400g), flame-grilled and finished in lemon, garlic, rosemary and white wine sauce, served with fries.



Service at this PRIMI is smooth and slick and the staff are experts on the menu options and the fresh ingredients used in the food. The cocktail menu and wine list are extensive – and the under 18s and teetotallers can enjoy the virgin variations of Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daquiris.



The laid-back vibe is sophisticated – chic industrial decor and dramatic murals, and the bar is a really cool feature of the restaurant design.

PRIMI is also a great family eatery: children rolled dough for their own pizzas while parents relaxed under umbrellas at the pavement tables, (and we lingered over some excellent coffee because we couldn’t manage dessert).

Next time I’m leaving space for the chocolate plate, apple slices with salted caramel sauce – or a Kahlua And Oreo Bamboozle Shake!
