Sometimes you have to put yourself FIRST
One of the common ways that most dieters mess up their weight loss progress is to make poor decisions in situations where they think they have no other choice.
For example, it’s “Mary-from-accounting’s birthday”, and there’s a giant chocolate cake in the tea room.
Dieter A walks in, wishes Mary a happy birthday, and helps herself to a big piece of cake. When asked why she decided to eat cake while on a diet, Dieter A will excuse the behaviour by saying something about not wanting to upset the birthday girl… Dieter A thinks that she didn’t have a choice, but REALLY, she did.
You see, “Mary-from-accounting” doesn’t REALLY care if you have her cake or not. She only cares that you wish her a happy birthday. Whether you have cake or not may be an issue for 5 seconds, and then she’s thinking about herself again.
For YOU though, the cake-decision lasts a lot longer. You’ve broken your diet, which is bad enough, but this also usually leads to more poor eating decisions – why not also have a cupcake and add a little extra sugar to your coffee since it’s a ‘birthday celebration’. Stop giving yourself excuses to break your diet.
Your diet is important.
So when there’s a decision to be made, consider yourself and the long-term effects of the decision on your diet and health, and forget about other people’s negativity. They are far less affected by your choices than you may think.
Sometimes balance is about putting the right person first – YOU.
