Choose a soup starter during the winter months to keep calories down

Consider choosing soup as a starter instead of other high calorie starters when dining out or even at home. This may be easy to do, especially during the cold winter months when many people feel like comforting food!

Homemade soups are fabulous to consume as you will have full control on just how healthy and nutritious they can be. Besides, you can add all of your favourite flavours and food preferences, thus increasing your level of contentment. Best of all is that you will get full faster and this may help you to eat less during the remainder of your meal thus preventing you from overeating – a great way to prevent weight gain!

According to Cosmopolitan, a study undertaken by Penn State University in 2007, showed that soups tend to fill up one’s stomach so much that people ‘end up eating fewer calories overall’. You will of course have to consume the soup at the onset of a meal.

Consult a professional

Always consult a dietician if you require assistance in putting a meal plan together. In addition, you should always check with your doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet, especially if you are under medication or suffer from any medical condition that has an effect on your diet.
