The ideal “weight loss pantry’ is an article series dedicated to uncovering what SHOULD be in your fridge (or pantry) if you hope to lose weight in 2018. So much focus is placed on what you shouldn’t eat if you’re dieting, so let’s check out what you should.

Stock up on: Hot drinks

One of the greatest pleasures in life is sitting down with your favourite hot drink – be it coffee, tea, chicory or Horlicks – and having a little “chill time”.

Hot drinks are even more important on a diet, because they can be used to replace ‘naughty’ food moments – instead of having a chocolate bar you can have a coffee, for example.

The trick is finding a way to enjoy your favourite hot drink without sacrificing your diet progress while you’re at it. Basically the key is to buy the right stuff, make it the right way, and then enjoy it with no guilt.

If you’re a coffee-lover, buy great-quality coffee,  and make it black and bitter – no milk or sugar. If tea is your favourite then, again, get a great tea, make it black and make it flavourful.

If you MUST use milk, make sure that you use very little, and remember that any milk that says it is low in fat has had the fat replaced with sugars. You can also try unsweetened nut milks like almond milk and soy.

And a special note for the hot chocolate loving dieters among us:

You CAN have a hot chocolate drink occasionally. There are ‘lite’ hot chocolates available, and you can use skim or low fat milk if you want to keep the calories low. You DEFINITELY don’t need sugar in hot chocolate.

Keep your hot drinks in stock and enjoy them.
