Imagine waking up on Mother’s Day and being led outside to see your new car wrapped in a bow: A Rolls-Royce SUV! We’re not kidding: they really HAVE launched one… although for most of us, it comes with a price tag we can only dream about. Still, it’s nice to dream, isn’t it?
Rolls-Royce has made an SUV which is pure luxury
Rolls-Royce’s first-ever SUV, the Cullinan, was launched today in the UK. It has special significance to the South African market because it is named after the world-famous Cullinan diamond, discovered by mine superintendent Frederick Wells on January 26, 1905. The 3 106-carat stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine in which it was found.
“To put 3 106-carats into perspective, 160-carats is about the size of an egg. This diamond in its original form was huge,” comments Anthony Matthew, Director at Shiny Rock Polished, Bespoke Jewellery, African Diamond and Gemstone Specialists. “If another diamond that size was to be discovered today, it would be priceless. It is quite fitting to name this luxury vehicle after this exquisite stone” he continues.
Naturally the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a niche vehicle
“It is expected to represent the ultimate in luxury. And, when it arrives in South Africa, we know that it will carry a hefty price tag. However we are certain that many South African motorists will search for this vehicle – because it is enormously aspirational,” said AutoTrader CEO, George Mienie.
While the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is expected to be at the very top of its game – in true Rolls-Royce tradition – the vehicle will be up against some stiff competition from established SUVs.
We wonder if the Royal Family will be driving this soon… A cool family car for William and Kate? Or a wedding gift for Meghan perhaps?
Mienie reveals that, “when it comes to SUVs with a R1-million plus price tag, the BMW X5 rules the roost. It is the most searched-for SUV in this sector over the past 12 months [March 2017 to Mar 2018]. It is followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Range Rover Sport,” he says.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which was conceived four years ago in the form of an idea and a sketch, will undoubtedly propel the local SUV market to even greater heights, much like the diamond did for the precious stone market back in 1905.
