The ideal “weight loss fridge’ is an article series dedicated to uncovering what SHOULD be in your fridge if you hope to lose weight in 2018. So much focus is placed on what you shouldn’t eat if you’re dieting, so let’s check out what you should.

Stock up on: Home-made pies

Are you into pies? Most people are. BUT they’re really bad if you’re on diet, right? Well, great news! Pies CAN be consumed as part of a well-balanced weight loss plan. But there are a few things to note, and a logical reason to use them.

First, why should you have pies in your WEIGHT LOSS kitchen?

Well, pies can be a real life-saver in certain situations. First, you can freeze them, so those days where you don’t have time to make a meal in the evening can be taken care of with a pie. And second, a pie can be an entire balanced meal in a convenient package. Think about it. A pie can be crammed with great ingredients – meat and veg.

The only thing you really need to worry about is the pastry. And if you’re making the pie yourself, you can roll out the pastry so that it’s nice and thin.

Bought pies often contain far too much fat (in the pastry and in the filling), starch (they are often filled up with flour to thicken them and potatoes) and too few veggies. Never mind the large amounts of salt that many of them contain.

So what pies CAN you eat?

Pies are actually relatively easy to make yourself. There are hundreds of recipes online. Find ones that are packed with veg and some meat. And buy some ready-made puff pastry from your local shop. You can pre-make several pies over a weekend or one evening, and then freeze them. It’s up to you whether you make a pot pie (with just a pastry lid) or individually portioned pies. Roll the pastry out nice and thinly and stock the pies with your healthy filling.

Make sure you use quality ingredients, and try as far as possible to make healthy choices when it comes to the recipe. Use spices to add flavour, and you’ll end-up with great-tasting pies that don’t cost a lot, are easy to make and freeze, and even easier to carry around when you need a mobile meal.

If you’re eating it for dinner, serve it with a delicious Greek salad (skip the mayo dressing and go for a vinaigrette instead).
