You never know how life will prepare you for your next big acting role, just ask Lockdown actress, Linda Sebezo who was inspired by her time in prison to channel her character for the show
Linda recently spoke to Tshisa Live where she revealed that her portrayal of a female prisoner wasn’t her first jail experience.
In fact, back in 2008, Linda was sentenced to three months in one of South Africa’s most notorious prisons, Johannesburg Correctional Centre – nicknamed ‘Sun City’.
Speaking to the publication the actress revealed that the time she spent behind bars was a dark period in her life:
“It was a dark time. I was in Sun City Maximum Prison for three months”.
As well as the real-life experience of being a prisoner, to prepare for her role as Maki Magwaza in the Mzansi Magic drama, Linda visited her former prison.
While there, she spoke to prison staff as well as some of the convicts, to get a fuller picture of jail life.
“Since I stay close to Sun City, I decided to go visit the prison and speak to some of the inmates and wardens to find out how things are done inside. I also mixed with some of my emotions.”
While reflecting on her own time there, she revealed to Tshisa Live that she couldn’t afford to let depression get the better of her when she was behind bars
“I don’t know what depression is. I have never let my life be destroyed by circumstances. I decided long ago to live my life the best way I want to and that’s what I am doing”
These days, Linda plays the role of the “most dangerous inmate in South Africa” on Mzansi Magic but thankfully, she’s a free woman in the real world.
What do you think of Linda’s character, Maki Magwaza on Lockdown?
