Maintaining healthy nails

Here are some really simple ways in which you can help keep your nails in prime condition.

Washing and drying hands

After washing our hands thoroughly, always ensure that you dry them just as thoroughly as moisture creates an environment for possible infections to develop.

Prevent splitting nails

Always moisturise your hands and fingers after drying them. This will help them to stay hydrated, thus preventing dryness and splitting.

Keep nails well-trimmed and neat

Trimming your nails on a regular basis can help keep them clean and neat. This can also help to avoid them from breaking. It is always easier to trim nails after taking a shower or bath as this is when they are softer than normal. Use an emery board to neaten the rough edges of the nails and be sure to file your nails in the same direction. Avoid filing in a back and forth manner as this can weaken and damage nails.

Nail polish remover

The use of nail polish remover should be limited as it contains a chemical known as ‘acetone’, which can cause nails to become dry. Check the product label to see if it contains acetone before using.

See your doctor if you are concerned about the health of your nails.
