You can help keep your digestive system healthy by ensuring that you consume sufficient roughage in your diet.
Foods that are good sources of roughage
Consider including some of the following foods in your diet, if you feel that your current diet seems to lack some fibre. Foods that are good sources of roughage include whole-wheat or seeded breads and rolls, whole-wheat pasta, oats, brown rice, sweet potatoes, mielies and cereals (for example bran flakes).
Remember that fibre is only one of the important nutrients that your body requires for its optimal functioning, so do not feel that you need to eat foods that are high in roughage on their own. Enjoy them as a component of a heathy and delicious diet plan.
Promotes good bowel movements
An adequate amount of fibre or roughage in one’s diet will help promote good bowel movements and thus help prevent constipation. Remember to hydrate with sufficient water too!
