One of the toughest things about losing a lot of weight is that it takes a long(ish) time to reach your end goal.

And while you should have some short-term goals along the way, you should also make sure that you acknowledge the commitment to your long term goal right from the very beginning. This helps you maintain perspective and a balanced idea of where you are headed.

It’s like doing a really long road-trip. You don’t want to think about how far away you are all the time, but you also don’t want to pretend you’re almost there and lose focus.

One thing that will really help you stay in the right frame of mind over the whole journey is to have someone who will keep you honest. Someone who is in good shape, who you know wants the best for you and will help you to succeed.

You want this person to ask you – maybe a couple of times a week – how you’re doing, what you’re struggling with, and how they can help. You need to know that he/she is going to give you uphill if you’re not sticking to your plan.

This takes the diet from being a private thing you’re doing (where cheating or apathy is easy) to something that has more public consequences. This is not about doing the diet to impress the other person, but about having someone you will have to answer to should you mess up. Humans hate taking public responsibility for things, so the system works really well.

Just make sure your accountability partner is someone who knows what this takes, and will stay the course with you, and you’ve got a winner.
