Valentine’s Day is a day of romance for couples, but for the family of Reeva Steenkamp it is a reminder of the day they lost their beloved daughter
It’s been five years since Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius on 14 February 2013.
Every year, her parents, June and Barry Steenkamp, remember her by visiting a beach in Port Elizabeth to scatter flowers in her memory.
June wrote a piece for The Telegraph to mark the fifth anniversary of her death.
“Five years on, Valentine’s Day is still full of pain and suffering,” she writes.
Speaking to the Mirror, June revealed that her and Barry wake up every morning for a special daily ritual
“We have not forgotten her. We get up every morning by 3.15. It was the time she was shot dead. I and Barry get up and look at her painting done by an artist (sic). It is a beautiful picture,” she told the Mirror.
Oscar was found guilty of Reeva’s murder and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence.
She maintains that he accidentally shot her after believing there was an intruder in his house.
“The chapter is finished now. I’m not dwelling on Oscar anymore. My focus is on the [The Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation]. That’s helping me survive this. Two families have been destroyed… There will never be justice for Reeva as she is not coming back, no matter what the sentence,” she said when asked about Oscar’s sentence being increased from the original six years.
Scores of South Africans took to Twitter to pay tribute to Reeva.
June started the foundation to help shine the spotlight on violence against women.
Happy Valentine’s Day. What will you be up to Today?
