With the new year comes New Year’s resolutions to transform our lives…
Some New Year’s resolutions are harder to keep than others (we’re looking at you going to the gym seven days a week).
Here are 10 beauty resolutions to make this year that you’ll definitely be able to stick to.
1. Rotate your mascara every three months
Keeping your favourite mascara when it’s way past its expiry date is a very dangerous habit you should break this year. Keeping mascara for too long runs the risk of bacteria growth in the mascara tube and could lead to a serious eye infection. Yuck!
Not only is it a health risk, but the product tends to flake and clump when expired, which is definitely not a good look.
2. Use eye cream at least once a day
Using your favourite eye cream at least once a day takes 10 seconds, making it a very doable beauty resolution. Put it on your bedside table or, for better, more soothing results, store it in your fridge next to the milk so you’ll remember it each morning when you’re making your coffee.
3. Clean your make-up brushes after you use them
Leaving your make-up brushes and other cosmetic tools for days on end without a wash can lead to breakouts and infections, but they also don’t work as well when they’re clogged with product. Investing in a great brush cleaner, whether it’s an automatic cleaning machine, a brush spray or a silicone make-up brush cleaner pad makes sure this resolution is easy to follow.
4. Wear sunscreen every day
Many of us only grab the sunscreen when it’s a super sunny day in summer, but forget when the weather is cloudy and cold. It’s important to apply sunscreen every single day, no matter what the weather. For your skin’s sake, if you only make one resolution this year, let it be this one.
5. Regularly change your pillowcases
It’s easy to forget, but it’s important to change your pillowcase at least once a week. If you have acne-prone skin or oily skin, it should be even more frequent. This ensures that the dead skin cells, sweat and sebum will be cleaned away before they cause havoc to your skin.
6. Focus on application as much as product choices
Having good quality make-up and skincare products is important, but how you apply them is just as important. Ensuring that you’re applying your products in the correct order and the right way is not only crucial to the health of your skin but the efficacy of the products.
7. Take the time to wash your face at night
Facial wipes are for travelling or emergencies, not everyday use! Resolve to wash your face properly at night and not sleep with your make-up on. Sleeping with your make-up on over a long period of time can lead to premature ageing and dull skin, so make sure this is one resolution that becomes part of your everyday routine.
8. Store your products properly
Finding the perfect spot to store your beauty products is about more than just decoration or being organised. It’s also about maintaining the products themselves. Many beauty products can deteriorate due to light exposure, humidity or extreme temperatures so make sure you choose the perfect location to store your (often expensive) beauty gems.
9. Treat your cuticles
It’s easy to forget to take of your cuticles and they can easily become a mess, especially if you regularly use acrylic or gel nails. Give your cuticles some love with specialised cuticle creams and oils to combat dryness, repair and protect, so your hands stay beautiful throughout the year.
10. Stop hoarding products
Every beauty product has an expiry date and using products that are past their lifespan can lead to bacteria on your face, which will lead to other issues. Make sure to declutter your make-up bag regularly and throw away your expired beauty products. That way you’ll have gorgeous skin and an organised beauty corner.
